Enhanced Service Provides Detailed Location and Intensity Predictions

Washington, DC - The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has launched an improved 30-day aurora forecast that provides more accurate predictions of the location and intensity of the aurora borealis.

The new forecast is based on the Ovation model, which incorporates data from multiple satellites and ground-based instruments to create a comprehensive picture of the Earth's magnetosphere. This information allows SWPC to predict the likelihood of aurora activity and its location for the next 30 days.

The forecast is available on the SWPC website and is updated daily. It includes a map showing the expected location of the aurora, as well as a table listing the maximum expected global geomagnetic conditions (Kp) for the coming 27 days. The Kp index is a measure of the strength of the Earth's magnetic field and is used to indicate the likelihood of aurora activity.

This new forecast is a valuable tool for aurora enthusiasts and anyone who wants to plan trips to see the aurora. By using the forecast, people can increase their chances of seeing the aurora and avoid traveling to areas where activity is unlikely.

For more information on the aurora forecast, please visit the SWPC website at www.swpc.noaa.gov.
