Canadian Grand Prix FP1: Verstappen Sets Quickest Time

Formula 1 Returns to Montreal for Action-Packed Weekend

Red Bull Driver Dominates Opening Practice Session

Montreal, Canada - The Canadian Grand Prix made its triumphant return to Formula 1 with an enthralling first free practice session (FP1) on Friday. The ninth round of the 2024 season saw championship leader Max Verstappen set the fastest time at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Verstappen wasted no time in showcasing his dominance on the 4.361-kilometer track. Behind the wheel of his Red Bull, he clocked in a blistering lap time of 1:14.005, nearly half a second faster than his nearest rivals.

Mercedes' George Russell emerged as Verstappen's closest challenger, finishing 0.478 seconds behind in second place. Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton settled for third with a lap time of 1:14.701.

The session also provided a glimpse of the competitive field behind the top three teams. Fernando Alonso, driving for Alpine, impressed with the fourth-fastest time, followed by Sergio Perez in the second Red Bull. Lando Norris (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) rounded out the top six.

FP1 was not without its incidents. Aston Martin's Sebastian Vettel briefly lost control of his car at Turn 11, while Alex Albon (Williams) reported an oil leak that forced him to cut short his session. However, all drivers emerged unscathed.

With the race weekend just getting started, the Canadian Grand Prix promises to deliver plenty of excitement and drama. FP2 will take place later today, providing further insights into the teams' performances and strategies.
