Algerian constitutional court confirms Tebboune's election victory
ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) - Algeria's constitutional court on Wednesday confirmed the victory of Abdelmadjid Tebboune in the country's presidential election, rejecting challenges to the results filed by four losing candidates.
Tebboune, a former prime minister, won the Dec. 12 election with 58% of the vote, according to the official results.
The four candidates who challenged the results - Ali Benflis, Abdelkader Bengrina, Azzedine Mihoubi and Abdelaziz Belaid - alleged fraud and irregularities in the vote.
However, the constitutional court ruled that there was no evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities that would have affected the outcome of the election.
"The court examined all the appeals and found no evidence to support the claims of fraud," said court president Tayeb Belaiz.
Tebboune's victory marks the end of a year of political turmoil in Algeria, which was sparked by the resignation of longtime President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April.
Tebboune has vowed to implement a number of reforms, including constitutional changes and measures to fight corruption.
However, he faces a number of challenges, including a struggling economy and a divided society.
